The UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) reported that its headquarters in Tripoli came under a rocket attack on Friday, although no casualties or damage were sustained.

The Libyan interior ministry claimed to have foiled an 'attempted attack' involving an anti-tank missile aimed at the compound housing UNSMIL's headquarters.

Additionally, authorities stated that they seized a pickup truck carrying two more missiles and a launch platform.

They did not attribute the attack to any specific group or individual.

This incident occurred amid ongoing tensions within Libya.

The country remains divided between the UN-recognized government based in Tripoli, led by Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah, and an opposing administration in the east.

Since the 2011 NATO-backed uprising that resulted in the death of long-time leader Muammar Qaddafi, Libya has struggled to achieve a unified government.

In May, Tripoli witnessed days of deadly fighting between rival armed groups, resulting in at least eight deaths according to UNSMIL.

This violence erupted following attempts by authorities to dismantle armed groups that had been controlling significant parts of the capital.

These groups were described as having grown stronger than the state itself.

During the time of the attack, UNSMIL chief Hanna Tetteh was briefing the Security Council in New York.

The mission emphasized that its premises were not affected and praised the Libyan authorities for their vigilance and swift response to ensure the security of UN facilities.

The Tripoli-based government condemned what it termed a 'failed attempt' to undermine security and stability, as well as harm Libya's international relations.

It also expressed commitment to establishing 'professional and unified security forces' and combating the proliferation of 'illegal armed groups'.
