Famine Declared in Gaza City as UK Foreign Secretary Condemns Israel's Aid Restrictions

The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) has confirmed famine in Gaza City, with warnings of potential spread to other regions.
UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy has strongly condemned Israel's restrictions on aid to Gaza, labeling it a 'moral outrage.' This condemnation follows the confirmation by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) of a famine in Gaza City.

The IPC warning indicates that the situation could worsen, affecting areas such as Deir Al-Balah and Khan Younis by the end of next month. The declaration of famine comes after months of warnings from aid organizations regarding Israel's military campaign and restrictions on essential goods like food and fuel.

These measures have exacerbated starvation levels, particularly among children in Gaza.According to Lammy, the consequences of the situation are 'sickening', especially for children.

He has called upon the Israeli government to immediately act towards preventing any further deterioration of the crisis by ensuring unhindered access to aid supplies such as food, medical equipment, fuel, and other necessities for those in dire need. The UK Foreign Secretary also urged Israel to remove all barriers that hinder humanitarian agencies, like the UN and international NGOs, from delivering critical assistance to Gaza.

He emphasized the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire to expedite and scale up aid delivery, especially considering the current epicenter of famine in Gaza City.Lammy reiterated his condemnation of the ongoing military actions in Gaza, highlighting their impact on the already catastrophic humanitarian situation and the danger they pose to civilians held as hostages by Hamas.

He urged a shift in course towards an immediate and permanent ceasefire, aiming to stop the suffering, secure hostage release, facilitate increased aid flow, and establish a framework for lasting peace. This dire conflict demands an end through an immediate and sustainable ceasefire, recognized as the only means to alleviate suffering, rescue civilians, and pave the way for a more enduring resolution.
