A wildfire, known as the Silver Fire, ignited in Central California on March 31, 2025, and has rapidly expanded, totaling over 1,250 acres (5.06 square kilometers) by Monday morning.
The fire broke out at approximately 2:11 PM local time in Inyo County, near the border with Nevada, and surged to over 1,000 acres within just six hours.
As of April 1, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) reported that the blaze remained at zero containment, with firefighting efforts hindered by strong winds gusting up to 35 mph (56.3 kph).
These erratic winds have complicated containment measures and caused hazardous conditions, affecting the ability to deploy firefighting aircraft.
Cal Fire spokesperson Chloe Castillo described the wind patterns as unpredictable, stating, "One minute they're pushing north, the next they're going east." In response to the advancing fire, evacuation orders have been issued for approximately 800 homes in the communities of Laws in Inyo County, Chalfant in Mono County, and the White Mountain Estates area.
Additionally, a stretch of about 50 kilometers of US Highway 6 has been closed to ensure public safety.
Firefighting crews are actively engaged in suppression efforts, but conditions remain challenging due to the weather.
