Casualties Surge in Gaza Amid Escalated Israeli Airstrikes
Over 54 Palestinians reported killed in intensified military operations across Gaza as conflict enters a new phase.
On May 5, 2025, a significant escalation in military operations in Gaza resulted in the deaths of at least 54 Palestinians, according to medical sources in the region.
The fatalities largely stemmed from Israeli airstrikes targeting various areas throughout the territory, with intense bombardments reported in the northwestern Gaza region, specifically around the Al-Karama area.
Reports indicate that 18 of the deceased individuals were killed in an airstrike on the Al-Karama neighborhood in Gaza City.
Violent airstrikes struck multiple neighborhoods in Gaza City and its northern outskirts, coinciding with artillery fire from Israeli forces targeting eastern districts, including the Al-Tuffah neighborhood.
In one incident in Al-Tuffah, six individuals, including children, lost their lives due to an Israeli strike on a residential building on Al-Nakheel Street.
Additional fatalities were reported in areas such as Al-Shuja'iyya.
Throughout Gaza City and other locations, persons were reported killed and injured in neighborhoods including Sheikh Radwan, and central areas like Al-Sahaba Junction, Omar Al-Mukhtar Street, and the vicinity of Al-Ribat College.
Later in the day, an update revealed that two airstrikes on the Al-Nuweiri Hill and around the Nuri Tower in the Al-Nasirat refugee camp resulted in eight more deaths and numerous injuries.
In the northern part of the Gaza Strip, four individuals were reported killed in an Israeli attack targeting a house in the Sultan area of Beit Lahiya, while four others lost their lives in airstrikes on Beit Hanoun.
A subsequent drone strike in Jabalia town resulted in another fatality.
In the southern region of Gaza, five individuals died following an air raid on a house in the Ma'an area east of Khan Younis.
Other air strikes and artillery fire resulted in additional deaths and injuries in areas such as Al-Mawasi, Qizan al-Rashwan, Qarara, and Al-Manara in Khan Younis.
Alongside the airstrikes, there were reports of a limited incursion by Israeli forces into the Al-Farahin neighborhood of Abasan Al-Kabira in eastern Khan Younis.
Air raids also targeted regions in eastern Rafah later in the evening.
Earlier reports indicated that within the preceding 24 hours, 32 Palestinians had been killed, with 119 others injured due to the ongoing conflict.
The Ministry of Health in Gaza noted that a total of 2,459 individuals have been killed and approximately 6,569 injured since hostilities resumed on March 18, 2025.
The cumulative toll since October 7, 2023, reportedly exceeds 52,567 killed, with more than 118,600 injuries recorded.
In a separate development, the military wing of Hamas, known as the Al-Qassam Brigades, claimed to have executed a combined ambush in Khan Younis against an Israeli engineering unit, stating they engaged the forces with small arms and inflicted casualties.
Furthermore, it was reported that Israeli forces are employing multiple operational units within Gaza, including Golani and Givati brigades, in conjunction with armored units 188 and 401.
This coordinated military strategy marks a significant development following the renewed hostilities in the area, with Israeli troops conducting ground incursions and assaults in various locations, including the Morag axis between Khan Younis and Rafah.
