Researchers in the Netherlands have reported a remarkably prolonged case of COVID-19 in a man who passed away last year, raising concerns about the emergence of more severe coronavirus variants.
According to a press release, the elderly man, who had a weakened immune system due to pre-existing conditions, was admitted to a hospital in Amsterdam in February 2022 after contracting
COVID-19.
His infection remained positive until his death in October 2023, lasting a total of 613 days, as reported by the German news agency.
There have been other recorded instances of prolonged infections in individuals whose immune systems were insufficiently equipped to combat the virus effectively.
The case is also of significant interest to researchers because the
coronavirus can undergo substantial mutations, especially in such long-term infections.
This poses the risk of new virus variants emerging that could more easily overcome the immune defenses of healthy individuals, highlighting the importance of continued vigilance and research in the fight against
COVID-19.
