Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has appointed former Vice-Admiral Eli Sharvit as the new head of the Israeli Security Agency, commonly known as Shin Bet.

This appointment was announced following a review process that included in-depth interviews with seven candidates, according to a statement from the Prime Minister's Office.

Eli Sharvit, who has a distinguished career spanning 36 years in the Israel Navy, held pivotal roles including Chief of Staff from 2014 to 2016 and Commander from 2016 to 2021. During his tenure, he focused on enhancing Israel's maritime defense capabilities, particularly concerning the nation’s economic waters.

Notably, Sharvit was involved in significant operational campaigns against groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah, as well as addressing threats posed by Iran.

The effective date for Sharvit’s appointment as Shin Bet chief is set for April 8, 2025, pending a review by the Israeli High Court of Justice.

The appointment follows political tensions that previously resulted in the dismissal of his predecessor.

Despite the confirmation of his appointment, further delays could occur based on legal considerations.
