Iran Braces for Western Action at the IAEA Meeting

Iran prepares to respond to expected Western resolutions amid escalating tensions over nuclear inspections.
Iran anticipates a resolution from Western nations during the upcoming meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), as reported by national sources.

A senior Iranian official indicated that Tehran believes this assembly will result in a formal rebuke concerning its nuclear activities.

To prepare for this, Iran has crafted a comprehensive legal memorandum to counter accusations made by international inspectors, which has been shared among diplomats ahead of the critical discussions scheduled to take place in Vienna.

According to reports, Iranian representatives are prepared to accuse IAEA inspectors of fabricating evidence and misrepresenting information pertaining to Iran's nuclear program.

This move follows a contentious quarterly report by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi that has sparked significant ire among Iranian officials.

Western diplomatic sources have indicated that European nations alongside the United States are working on a draft resolution that would label Iran as non-compliant with its international obligations regarding nuclear safeguards.

This resolution aims to underscore concerns about Iran's nuclear developments and its potential military dimensions.

In a detailed response to the IAEA's May report, Iranian officials have accused Grossi of disseminating misleading and recycled information regarding Iran's nuclear activities.

A 19-page analysis prepared by Iranian diplomats contends that IAEA inspectors employed 'slanderous language' in their claims about Iran's handling of sensitive documents, although specific details regarding these documents remain undisclosed by the IAEA.

The IAEA's report has drawn Iranian ire, particularly due to Grossi’s assertions of serious concerns regarding Iran’s collection and analysis of classified IAEA documents, which are said to undermine trust and cooperation.

This acknowledgment by the IAEA marks a significant shift in the framing of Iran’s compliance and oversight.

The Iranian nuclear program, previously shadowed by allegations of espionage, now faces intensified scrutiny.

Iran’s latest communication to IAEA member states warns that should these nations continue to exploit Iran's patience, it may be compelled to take retaliatory measures, commensurate with evolving conditions and the actions of other parties.

Despite the rising tensions, Grossi, during remarks in Cairo, emphasized the need for increased transparency from Iran regarding its nuclear agenda, downplaying the impact of Iranian criticisms against his team.

He asserted that comprehensive explanations regarding multiple activities are crucial for restoring confidence.

The ongoing investigations into undisclosed nuclear activities within Iran remain stagnant, as noted in the IAEA’s quarterly report.

Furthermore, Iran's pace of enriching uranium to 60 percent purity continues to heighten concerns, nearing levels associated with military applications.

In light of any perceived stalemate in the IAEA's inquiries, European nations may call for an extraordinary session of the Agency’s Board of Governors in July, with the potential to revert Iran's case to the United Nations Security Council.

This scenario could trigger the reactivation of the 'snapback' mechanism to reimpose sanctions prior to their expiration under UN Security Council Resolution 2231 in October.

Iran has signaled its willingness to withdraw from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), a foundational accord aimed at curbing the spread of nuclear arms, should the situation escalate further.
