Iranian Revolutionary Guards Chief Hossein Salami Killed in Israeli Strikes
Salami, a key military figure in Iran, died during expansive Israeli military operations targeting Iranian facilities and leadership.
Hossein Salami, the commander of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), was killed in Israeli airstrikes on June 12, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing tensions between Iran and Israel.
At 65, Salami was a prominent figure in Iran’s military hierarchy, recognized for his hardline rhetoric against the United States and Israel.
Just weeks before his death, he had issued warnings that Iran would unleash severe reprisals if attacked, stating that Iran was prepared for any escalation.
The Israeli military coordinated extensive strikes aimed at various military sites in Iran, including nuclear facilities and ballistic missile factories.
Israeli officials characterized these operations as necessary to counter perceived threats emanating from Iranian activities and capabilities.
In addition to Salami, the strikes resulted in the deaths of several senior military officials, including Mohammad Bagheri, Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Gholamali Rashid, the deputy commander, and several nuclear scientists.
Reacting to the strikes, Iranian officials stated that both the United States and Israel would face severe consequences, with widespread concerns that this might further destabilize an already volatile region.
The United States government has denied any involvement in these military actions, amidst fears that hostilities could escalate into broader conflict.
Born in 1958, Salami joined the Revolutionary Guards in 1980 during the Iran-Iraq War.
He held the deputy commander role from 2009 and became the commander in 2019. Throughout his military career, he faced sanctions from international bodies, including the United Nations and the United States, due to his role in Iran's controversial nuclear and military programs.
Salami was vocal about Iran's military strategies and capabilities, suggesting the country was close to becoming a major global power.
Salami's statements often intensified adversarial sentiments towards Israel, notably declaring intentions to erase Israel from the political map.
His combative stance was underscored following Israeli strikes on Iranian interests in Syria, wherein he vowed retaliation against what he termed the 'Zionist regime.'
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, established post-1979 Islamic Revolution, is tasked with safeguarding Iran's Islamic Republic and operates parallel to the regular armed forces.
The IRGC consists of over 190,000 active personnel and commands its own ground, naval, and aerial divisions.
It reports directly to Iran's Supreme Leader, further solidifying its influence within the military and political landscape of the country.
The IRGC is also significant in Iran’s economic sphere, believed to control a substantial portion of the economy through diverse business ventures.
Its external operational arm, the Quds Force, maintains connections with various militant groups across the Middle East, including Hezbollah in Lebanon and other factions within Iraq and Yemen, reflecting Iran's strategy of extending its influence by supporting allied governments and armed organizations.
This shift in military power following Salami’s death may have profound implications for Iran's internal dynamics and its engagements in the region, particularly amidst ongoing hostilities with Israel.
