Israel Proposes 40-Day Ceasefire in Gaza Amid Ongoing Conflict

The ceasefire proposal seeks the release of hostages in exchange for a halt to hostilities and a prisoner swap.
Israel has presented a proposal for a 40-day ceasefire in Gaza, according to local media sources.

The proposal involves negotiations with the Palestinian group Hamas, facilitated by mediators from Egypt and Qatar.

Key components of the ceasefire include the release of 11 living hostages by Hamas and the return of 16 bodies of Israeli individuals, alongside providing information regarding the remaining captives in Gaza.

In exchange, Israel has indicated it would release an unspecified number of Palestinian prisoners currently held in its jails.

Israeli officials have outlined a timeline within the proposal: they would seek information about the remaining captives on the fifth day of the ceasefire and request the release of the bodies of 16 Israeli hostages on the tenth day.

This number represents approximately half of the total remains believed to be held by Hamas in Gaza.

No statements have been made by officials from Israel, Hamas, or the mediating entities concerning the latest proposal.

According to Israeli estimates, around 59 captives are still held in Gaza, including 24 individuals who are still alive.

Meanwhile, Israeli prisons currently house over 9,500 Palestinian prisoners, with human rights organizations alleging harsh conditions, including reports of torture, mistreatment, and medical neglect that have reportedly led to fatalities.

Since launching an aerial campaign in Gaza on March 18, Israel has reported over 1,000 fatalities and more than 2,000 injuries, effectively ending a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement which was active in January.

The situation in Gaza has resulted in the deaths of more than 50,000 Palestinians since October 2023, with a significant portion of these casualties being women and children.

In response to the ongoing conflict, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants in November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, citing allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Additionally, Israel is facing accusations of genocide at the International Court of Justice related to its military operations in the Gaza Strip.
