Israel's Military Chief Resigns Amid Controversy Over October 7 Attack

Israel's Military Chief Resigns Amid Controversy Over October 7 Attack

Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi steps down, citing unfulfilled objectives from Gaza conflict and recent fragile truce.
JERUSALEM: On Tuesday, the head of Israel's military, Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, announced his resignation, acknowledging responsibility for what he described as a 'failure' to prevent Hamas's attack on October 7. This development comes shortly after the implementation of a tenuous ceasefire, brokered after 15 months of warfare in Gaza.

In a public resignation statement issued by the military, Lt. Gen. Halevi cited his decision to step down 'due to my acknowledgment of responsibility for the (military’s) failure on October 7.' Despite this, he highlighted that his departure coincided with 'significant successes' during his tenure.

Halevi mentioned that not all objectives of the Gaza conflict had been met, but stated that the military intends to continue efforts to systematically dismantle Hamas, secure the release of hostages, and facilitate the return of Israelis displaced by militant actions.

Following Halevi's resignation, Major General Yaron Finkelman also resigned from his role as the head of Israel's southern military command, the division directly overseeing operations in Gaza.

The assault on October 7, reported as the deadliest attack in Israel's history, claimed the lives of 1,210 individuals, primarily civilians, according to an AFP tally of Israeli official data.

The resulting conflict led to widespread destruction across Gaza, with figures from the health ministry in the Hamas-administered region stating a death toll of 46,913, with the United Nations validating these figures as reliable.

The attack resulted in 251 people being taken hostage, compounding the national crisis for Israeli leadership.

Presently, 91 hostages remain captive, with the military confirming that 34 of these are deceased.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's initial promise at the war's inception was to dismantle Hamas and recover all hostages.

On the political front, Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid urged Prime Minister Netanyahu to emulate Halevi's decision, calling for his resignation and that of his 'catastrophic' administration.

This leadership reshuffle transpired amid a diplomatic pause in hostilities.

After protracted, unsuccessful discussions, Qatar and the United States successfully mediated a ceasefire, which was announced to take effect the day before Donald Trump's inauguration as the President of the United States.
