Israeli Airstrikes Hit Southern Beirut Amid Ongoing Tensions

Israel conducts extensive air raids targeting Hezbollah sites in Beirut while Israel adds defense measures in the north.
Israeli military operations intensified on June 5, 2025, with reports of 23 airstrikes targeting the southern suburbs of Beirut, an area known for its association with Hezbollah activities.

The airstrikes follow an order from the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) for the evacuation of buildings in neighborhoods such as Al-Hadath, Haret Hreik, and Borj Brajneh, suspected to be used for the production of drones by Hezbollah.

Israeli media sources characterized the scale of the airstrikes as the most significant since the declaration of a ceasefire, prompting the IDF to place missile defense systems in northern Israel on heightened alert to prepare for potential retaliatory actions.

In response to the airstrikes, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant stated, "We will not allow any party to pose a threat to the northern residents and all of Israel, and we will continue to enforce the conditions of the ceasefire without leniency." He emphasized that the Lebanese government bears direct responsibility for ensuring adherence to the ceasefire agreement.

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich reinforced this stance, committing to prevent Hezbollah from gaining strength to threaten Israel again.

On the Lebanese side, a security source reported that Israel ignored a request for restraint and began airstrikes in specified areas of the southern suburbs.

Footage broadcasted by local media depicted widespread displacement as residents fled areas threatened by Israeli military strikes.

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam condemned the Israeli assaults as a systematic and targeted act against Lebanon, labeling it a violation of Lebanese sovereignty and United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701. He urged the international community to hold Israel accountable and ensure its withdrawal from occupied territories.

Lebanese President Michel Aoun denounced the Israeli incursions as a blatant violation of international agreements, suggesting that these actions send a provocative message regarding U.S. policies in the region.

Prior to the airstrikes, the IDF announced plans to strike underground infrastructure in southern Beirut, alleged to be dedicated to drone manufacturing, citing that Hezbollah has been bolstering its drone production in preparation for future conflicts.

Additionally, the Lebanese Army reported the discovery of a camouflage surveillance device equipped with a camera in the outskirts of Yaroun, south of Lebanon, believed to be linked to Israeli intelligence operations.

The escalation of violence comes amid ongoing conflicts in the region.

Earlier reports indicated that two individuals were killed in Israeli strikes targeting southern Lebanon, amidst thousands of violations recorded since the ceasefire took effect late last year, with at least 208 fatalities and over 500 injuries reported.

In a related development, the Lebanese government asserted that over 500 weapon storage and infrastructure sites had been dismantled in southern Lebanon since the ceasefire agreement concluded the 2023 conflict.

In a different context, Israeli media reported a temporary shutdown of Ben Gurion Airport due to a missile fired from Yemen, which was later intercepted by Israeli defense systems.

The missile incident follows an ongoing series of threats from the Houthi movement in Yemen against Israeli targets, amidst escalating regional tensions.

This complex scenario reflects the multifaceted geopolitical dynamics in the region, encompassing issues ranging from Israel's military strategies to the responses from Lebanon and the broader implications on regional stability.
