Israeli Army Intercepts Missile Launched from Yemen Amid Ongoing Regional Tensions

The interception follows claims from Yemen’s Houthi forces of an attack targeting Israel's Ben Gurion airport.
On June 1, 2025, the Israeli army reported the successful interception of a missile launched from Yemen after air raid sirens activated in Jerusalem and several other cities across Israel.

According to a statement from the Israeli military, the missile was intercepted in response to these alerts.

The Houthi movement in Yemen, which is backed by Iran, subsequently claimed responsibility for the missile launch, stating that a ‘ballistic missile’ was aimed at Ben Gurion airport, Israel’s main international airport.

Houthi military spokesperson Yehya Saree also reported that three drones were deployed towards Israel as part of the attack.

This incident is part of a series of missile and drone strikes launched by the Houthis against Israel since the outbreak of conflict in Gaza in October 2023, triggered by an attack from the Palestinian militant group Hamas on Israeli territory.

Despite the intensity of the assaults, the Israeli air defense system has intercepted the majority of the projectiles aimed at its territory.

The missile interception on Sunday comes after a previous attack on Thursday, which was also attributed to Houthi forces.

The Houthis have publicly stated that their missile attacks are a form of solidarity with the Palestinian cause.

Following a ceasefire that lasted two months and ended in March 2025, the group resumed its attacks following Israel's renewed military operations in Gaza.

Earlier in May, a missile fired from Yemen breached defenses, striking within the perimeter of Ben Gurion airport for the first time, showcasing a potential escalation in the threat posed to Israeli airspace.

In retaliation for these attacks, Israel has conducted several strikes against Houthi positions in Yemen, targeting critical infrastructure including ports and the airport in the capital Sanaa.
