Lebanon Reports Wounded Soldiers Following Israeli Airstrike

Two individuals, including a soldier, have been injured in an Israeli drone strike in southern Lebanon amid ongoing tensions post-ceasefire.
BEIRUT: The Lebanese Armed Forces reported that two individuals, including a soldier, sustained injuries from an Israeli strike on Sunday in southern Lebanon.

The incident occurred at the Beit Yahun checkpoint in the Bint Jbeil district, approximately eight kilometers from the Israel-Lebanon border.

According to the army's statement, the soldier was moderately wounded as a result of the strike targeting a vehicle, which the health ministry attributed to an 'Israeli enemy drone'.

The Israeli military has not yet issued a response regarding the reported airstrike.

This incident is one of several strikes reported in southern Lebanon during the past week, raising concerns over regional stability.

Despite a ceasefire established in November aimed at ending over a year of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, Israel has continued to conduct military operations within Lebanon, claiming to target Hezbollah operatives.

The ceasefire arrangement mandated that Hezbollah, which is backed by Iran, withdraw its fighters north of Lebanon's Litani River and dismantle military infrastructure in the southern region.

In exchange, Israel was to withdraw its forces from Lebanon, although it has maintained troops in five strategically significant areas.

In the context of the ceasefire, the Lebanese army has intensified its deployment in the south, seeking to assert control over the area as Israeli forces gradually withdraw.

Recent assessments from President Joseph Aoun indicated that the army's presence now extends to over 85% of southern Lebanon, citing ongoing Israeli occupation of certain border positions as an obstacle to complete control.

This latest escalation comes in the wake of a deadly week for Lebanon's military, with reports indicating that four separate strikes have occurred, killing several personnel.

Additionally, a munitions explosion in April led to the deaths of three soldiers while they were engaged in operations to dismantle explosives near the border.
