US Embassy in Libya Refutes Claims of Plans to Relocate Palestinians from Gaza

The US government denies reports of a potential resettlement scheme for Palestinians in Libya amid ongoing regional tensions.
The US embassy in Libya issued a statement denying reports that the US government is formulating plans to relocate Palestinians from the Gaza Strip to Libya.

The clarification came in response to a report by NBC News, which alleged that the Trump administration is considering plans to permanently resettle up to one million Palestinians.

The report cited insights from five individuals, including two with direct knowledge and a former US official.

The embassy stated, 'The report of alleged plans to relocate Gazans to Libya is untrue.', emphasizing the US government's position on the matter.

However, the Tripoli-based internationally recognized Government of National Unity was not immediately available for comment.

Historically, former President Trump has expressed interest in the United States assuming control of Gaza and suggested relocating its Palestinian population.

Such proposals have faced significant backlash, with Palestinians drawing parallels to the 1948 “Nakba,” when hundreds of thousands were dispossessed from their homes during the conflict surrounding the establishment of Israel.

In earlier discussions, Trump proposed that regional allies, specifically Egypt and Jordan, accommodate displaced individuals from Gaza, a notion that was met with rejection from both nations.

The idea garnered widespread global condemnation, with Palestinian advocates, other Arab nations, and the United Nations characterizing it as a form of ethnic cleansing.

Most recently, during a visit to Qatar, Trump reiterated aspirations to transform Gaza into what he referred to as a 'freedom zone,' stating that the region has little left to preserve.

He has previously expressed his vision for Gaza to develop into the 'Riviera of the Middle East.'
