Plane Crash in San Diego Ignites Major Residential Fire, Prompting Evacuations

Emergency crews respond to a deadly aircraft accident in Murphy Canyon, leading to significant property damage and safety evacuations for local residents.
A plane crash occurred early Thursday morning in the Murphy Canyon neighborhood of San Diego, California, resulting in a deadly incident that ignited a massive fire across the residential area.

The aircraft went down shortly before 3:45 a.m. at the intersection of Sample and Salmon Streets, near the Tierrasanta community and the Admiral Baker Golf Course.

The crash triggered a five-alarm blaze at a two-story residence located at 10257 Sample Street, effectively damaging multiple homes and several nearby vehicles.

The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department reported that the situation was exacerbated by the presence of jet fuel scattered throughout the vicinity.

Assistant Fire Chief Dan Eddy emphasized the urgency of the response, stating, "There is jet fuel all over the place.

Our main goal is to search all these homes and get everybody out right now."

Eyewitness accounts and initial investigations indicate that the plane made a direct impact on several houses, and the chaotic circumstances were compounded by heavy fog that significantly reduced visibility at the time of the crash, likely contributing to the accident.

Emergency personnel are continuing search-and-rescue operations as multiple casualties have been reported, although details regarding fatalities have not been confirmed.

Local authorities are working to assess the full extent of the damage to the affected properties and the community.

In response to the emergency, the California Highway Patrol has instituted temporary closures of sections of Interstate 15, encompassing the northbound off-ramp to Aero Drive and southbound lanes near Santo Road, as emergency services engaged with the crisis.

Evacuations remain mandatory for residents living on Salmon, Sample, and Sculpin Streets.

An evacuation center has been established at Miller Elementary School, with Hancock Elementary School also closed for the day.

Childcare services are being provided at Miller Elementary for affected families.

This incident is part of a troubling pattern of aviation-related accidents across the United States in recent weeks.

Just last month, four fatalities were reported in a crash in Illinois.

Additionally, a helicopter accident in the Hudson River resulted in one death, and another crash in Florida led to multiple fatalities.

In another occurrence, debris from a commercial jet experiencing engine failure descended onto the suburbs of Denver after an emergency landing.
