Public Protests Erupt in Turkey Following Arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu

Istanbul witnesses large-scale demonstrations as opposition rallies against the detention of the prominent mayor amid allegations of corruption and terrorism.
Protests have intensified in Istanbul following the arrest of Ekrem Imamoglu, the mayor of Istanbul and a key figure from the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP).

Turkish police detained Imamoglu on accusations related to graft and terrorism on March 20, 2025, drawing strong condemnation from opposition leaders who characterize the move as a politically motivated assault on democracy.

The engagement of thousands in rallies underscores Imamoglu’s significance as President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s principal political rival, particularly with the CHP poised to announce its candidate for the upcoming 2028 presidential elections.

Ozgur Ozel, the chairman of the CHP, led calls for demonstrations, urging citizens to gather in support of Imamoglu, despite a government ban on public gatherings in the city.

The Istanbul Governor’s office deployed heightened police presence across the city to enforce the ban, and authorities reportedly disrupted public transportation services in an effort to manage the protestors.

The arrests of Imamoglu and 106 others are part of ongoing investigations into claims of terrorism and corruption, prompting critics to assert that these actions are politically charged.

Ozel accused Erdogan's administration of orchestrating a coup, defining the forcible maneuvers against the elected mayor as an urgent affront to civic liberties.

In his address to assembled citizens, Ozel emphasized the necessity of collective action against governmental overreach.

Authorities have further tightened controls by reducing internet bandwidth to access various social media platforms, including popular applications like X, YouTube, and WhatsApp, allegedly to curb the spread of dissent online.

In conjunction with Imamoglu's detention, a university diploma issued to him was revoked, escalating tensions surrounding his political future.

Many observers note that Imamoglu has faced escalating legal challenges as his popularity has surged, with government investigations increasingly targeting prominent opposition figures.

Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc warned against public demonstrations, labeling attempts to influence the judiciary as dangerous.

The political climate remains fraught, with public sentiment growing restless against perceived authoritarian trends in the governance of Turkey.

The situation continues to unfold, with local authorities closely monitoring the protests and the opposition's responses to these recent developments.
