Thousands of Fabricated Reviews and Phony Businesses: The Extensive Fraud Exposed on Google Search and Maps

An investigation has uncovered a global fraud network peddling counterfeit business listings and fake reviews on Google Maps. The revelation of this extensive scam, which sells deceptive business profiles and reviews on Google Maps, serves as a glaring reminder that ratings, reviews, views, likes, and followers can be purchased for millions online and should not be accepted without thorough verification. Although companies like Google are making efforts—perhaps—to combat fake accounts that pay them substantial profits, consumers need to remain vigilant when searching for services on the internet.
An investigation sparked by a complaint from a Texas locksmith revealed an international fraud operation that sold tens of thousands of counterfeit business listings via Google Maps. The fraudsters seized control of established business profiles and fabricated positive reviews to lure unsuspecting customers. Here’s how you can identify similar scams and safeguard yourself against them.

Google has uncovered more than 10,000 fraudulent business listings on its widely used Google Maps application, which is available on nearly every smartphone, and has begun legal proceedings against those involved in the deceit. CBS Network disclosed this information yesterday (Wednesday). Findings from a thorough investigation conducted by the company indicated that this fraud network created and marketed fake business profiles on the platform.

The Fraud Network and Its Strategies
The scam was first detected when a licensed locksmith in Texas realized that an unlicensed locksmith was using his name on Google Maps. A local inquiry revealed a larger scheme, prompting a major investigation. Ultimately, Google chose to eliminate over 10,000 fraudulent listings of this nature from its maps.

These deceptive listings spanned from entirely fictitious businesses to hijacked profiles of legitimate establishments, which were copied and modified to promote unauthorized entities. Halima Dlayne Prado, Google’s legal advisor, stated that when the company is alerted to such fraudulent activities, they promptly work to identify similar illegitimate listings.

This issue is not a recent occurrence. Google has been combatting fake businesses offering services through Google Maps for years. The fraudsters would create a profile for an existing company that either lacked an official profile or wasn't being managed, attaching a real address, a legitimate website, or photos, but instead of listing a genuine phone number, they would use their own.

How the Fraudsters Function
Once these counterfeit profiles were established, Google Maps would frequently recommend the phony company based on users’ searches. However, users would unknowingly connect with a scammer posing as a legitimate, licensed business. In some instances, it was even suggested that Google profited from this arrangement, as fraudulent companies would pay to promote themselves, enhancing their rankings in relevant search results.

According to Google, the majority of these fake enterprises were locksmiths, towing firms, and other services sought in emergency situations. In these urgent contexts, individuals often search for local professionals on Google Maps, even if they have never utilized their services before. Regrettably, instead of reaching a bona fide professional, they would unwittingly fall prey to a fraudster.

The Escalating Sophistication of Fraudsters
Halima Dlayne Prado noted that the fraudsters were becoming increasingly adept. They collaborated with agents around the globe and even leveraged social media to broaden their fraudulent networks. Google reported that the scammers also sold fake positive reviews for businesses, further obscuring negative feedback on social platforms. In one lawsuit, Google presented evidence of a Facebook post featuring "5-star reviews" for wholly fabricated businesses.

Common Scams Employed by Fraudsters
Google's investigation uncovered several tactics employed by these fraudsters. In some instances, customers would call a legitimate company, but the call would be intercepted and redirected through a lead generation service that would connect them to the scammers. More often than not, the fraudster providing the service would charge exorbitant prices, exploiting the customer’s urgency to complete the job. Since many clients are under pressure to obtain the service, they are compelled to pay these inflated rates.

How to Steer Clear of These Scams
Google advises exercising caution, even in urgent situations. Consumers should thoroughly verify the website URL and phone number of the company they are contacting, ensuring they match the Google Maps listing. A warning sign should be raised if the company requests more information than necessary, such as an ID number, or insists on payment via unconventional methods like gift cards or wire transfers.

To tackle fraud of this nature, Google has developed a range of tools, both automated and facilitated by human analysts. The company claims it has successfully removed or blocked approximately 12 million fake business profiles each year over the past two years. Additionally, Google announced it will donate any compensation received through legal actions related to this matter to organizations that combat fraud.

Google’s Pledge Against Fraud
Google is dedicated to making Google Maps a safer platform for both businesses and consumers. The company is actively engaged in investigating fraudulent activities and implementing measures designed to mitigate the proliferation of fake business listings and reviews. The recent legal actions emphasize its ongoing commitment to preserving the integrity of its services and protecting users from deceitful practices.

Further Insights on Fraudulent Business Listings
Fake business listings on platforms like Google Maps not only mislead consumers into scams but also damage the reputations of legitimate businesses. Fraudsters can skew the competitive landscape by manipulating search results, granting unfair advantages to counterfeit enterprises that misinform customers. Google’s initiatives to eliminate fake listings represent a crucial step toward shielding both consumers and businesses from these malicious practices.

As the use of online platforms and mapping services continues to grow, so too does the potential for fraud in these realms. Both businesses and consumers must remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to platforms like Google to help prevent the spread of fake listings.
