Elon Musk-led initiative reduces NASA’s funding by approximately $420 million amid agency restructuring efforts.
The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an initiative launched during the Trump administration and currently led by
Elon Musk, has confirmed a budget reduction of approximately $420 million for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
This move comes within a week of prior announcements regarding budgetary measures.
NASA operates as an independent U.S. federal agency that oversees the nation’s civil space program, aeronautics research, and space exploration endeavors.
DOGE stated that this budget cut is part of broader efforts to streamline governmental operations, claiming to have eliminated approximately 80% of what it termed unnecessary contracts within NASA.
This restructuring aims to enhance efficiency and eliminate redundancies in federal spending.
In a formal announcement, Janet Petro, Acting Administrator for NASA, provided insights into the forthcoming changes.
She detailed plans to close several key offices including NASA's Office of Technology, Policy, and Strategy, the Office of the Chief Scientist, as well as the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility branch in the Office of Diversity and Equal Opportunity.
Furthermore, these organizational changes are expected to involve reductions in workforce levels across these units.
The decisions by DOGE reflect an ongoing government focus on fiscal accountability and the reallocation of resources within federal agencies, with implications for NASA's planned missions and objectives.
The agency has historically contributed to significant scientific advancements and international collaborations in space exploration.
