Ukrainian Drone Attacks Moscow Amid Victory Day Preparations
Local authorities confirm interception of drones as foreign leaders arrive for commemorations.
On Wednesday, Moscow's Mayor Sergei Sobyanin announced that Ukrainian drones targeting the capital were intercepted following the arrival of foreign leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, for Victory Day celebrations commemorating the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.
Sobyanin confirmed the neutralization of nine drones in the hours leading up to their approach to Moscow.
He stated on the messaging platform Telegram, "Emergency services personnel are working at the site of the debris."
In response to the drone threat, the Russian aviation authority temporarily closed Zhukovsky Airport, located in the suburbs of Moscow, as well as the main airport in Kaluga, south of the capital.
Moscow is preparing to host over 20 world leaders for a military parade in Red Square on Friday, marking the historic victory achieved by the Soviet Union and its allies during the global conflict.
On the Ukrainian side, two individuals were reported killed and seven others injured in drone strikes carried out by Russia in Kyiv on Wednesday, as reported by Kyiv's Mayor Vitali Klitschko.
He urged residents to stay in shelters as "the enemy drone attack on the city continues."
Eight individuals, including four children, sustained injuries, with three children hospitalized due to burns from drone debris that fell on a nine-story building, causing a fire in the Sviatoshynskyi district of western Kyiv.
Emergency services indicated that the remaining injured were treated at the scene.
Simultaneously, the city of Zaporizhzhia in southern Ukraine experienced an attack by 13 Russian drones late Tuesday into Wednesday, according to police reports, which confirmed three injuries from the assault.
