Unlikely Alliances and Global Tensions: From U.S. Politics to Middle East Conflicts

Kamala Harris and Liz Cheney unite against Trump, while global tensions rise with Middle East conflicts and migrant struggles in Lebanon.
In Ripon, Wisconsin, an unusual alliance was formed as Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican Liz Cheney united to challenge Donald Trump, highlighting him as a threat to democracy and urging voters to reject his narrative. Transitioning to Michigan, Trump continued to assert his election fraud claims, illustrating the battle for key battleground states ahead of the election.

Meanwhile, President Joe Biden expressed doubts about an "all-out war" in the Middle East as tensions rise, with global oil prices reacting to Israel's strikes on Hezbollah in Beirut following Tehran's largest attack on Israel. Amidst these concerns, discussions are ongoing about how to respond, including possible Israeli strikes on Iran's oil facilities.

Turning to Afghanistan, the Taliban government, facing threats from the Islamic State Khorasan, seeks international intelligence cooperation, despite strained relations with the West. This complex situation includes challenges due to the Taliban’s links to groups like Al-Qaeda, raising concerns about the implications of such cooperation.

In Tunisia, President Kais Saied is expected to secure reelection despite controversies surrounding his power consolidation tactics, such as dissolving parliament and rewriting the constitution. This has led to international concerns over democratic practices and opposition groups calling for an election boycott.

Shifting to Lebanon, Sierra Leonean domestic workers, like Fatima and Mariatu Tholley, find themselves stranded and undocumented after Israeli airstrikes destroyed their employers' homes, exacerbating their vulnerability under Lebanon's "kafala" system. This system often involves exploitative practices such as wage withholding and passport confiscation.

Finally, Israeli strikes near the Lebanon-Syria border have further heightened tensions, disrupting escape routes amidst fears of a broader conflict. This disruption comes as accusations of Hezbollah's military equipment smuggling surfaced, intensifying an already volatile situation involving over 1.2 million displaced Lebanese.
