The United States government has expressed that the formation of a new Syrian government is a potentially positive development, though it remains firm that relief from sanctions will not be considered until substantial progress is verified.

This statement follows the announcement by Syria’s interim President, Ahmed Al-Sharaa, of a new government comprised predominantly of Sunni Muslims, marking a significant shift from the previous administration led by Bashar Assad, who hails from the Alawite minority.

State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce addressed journalists on the matter, highlighting the endured hardships faced by the Syrian populace under the Assad regime.

She articulated hopes that the new government's establishment heralds an era that fosters inclusivity and representation within Syria.

Despite this acknowledgment, Bruce underscored that the interim authorities must take definitive stances against terrorism, prohibit foreign terrorist fighters from holding any official positions, and ensure that Iranian influences do not exploit Syrian territory.

Furthermore, the U.S. government outlined several prerequisites for sanction adjustments, stressing the necessity for the interim authorities to verifiably dismantle Assad's chemical weapons stockpiles.

Bruce also called for measures to assist in the recovery of U.S. and other citizens who have gone missing in Syria, and to safeguard the rights and freedoms of Syria’s diverse religious and ethnic minorities.

In terms of sanctions policy, Bruce emphasized that any potential modifications would be contingent upon the interim government fulfilling these outlined commitments.

Meanwhile, the European Union has indicated a possible movement towards easing certain sanctions imposed on Syria, with nations such as Britain and Canada already having lifted some restrictions.
