Strikes in Sanaa follow increased Houthi attacks on shipping in the Red Sea and threats against Israel.
On March 19, 2025, the United States conducted airstrikes targeting positions in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, according to reports from Houthi-operated Al Masirah TV. This action marks the continuation of military operations initiated by the US in response to a series of attacks conducted by the Houthi movement on shipping lanes in the Red Sea.
Local sources indicate that multiple strikes targeted the Al-Jarraf district, which is situated near the city's airport.
The current round of strikes commenced on March 16, 2025, and has resulted in significant casualties, with reports confirming at least 31 fatalities.
This escalation represents the largest military operation carried out by the US against Houthi targets since President
Donald Trump resumed office in January 2025. Following these attacks, President Trump issued a stern warning to Iran, asserting that the nation would face repercussions for any further Houthi assaults.
However, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards stated that the Houthi group operates independently, making its own strategic and operational decisions.
In defiance of the US airstrikes, the Houthis have announced intentions to escalate their military activities, including potential attacks targeting Israel.
On the preceding day, the group claimed to have fired a ballistic missile toward Israel and expressed plans to broaden their military objectives there in retribution for renewed Israeli airstrikes in Gaza, which resumed after a period of relative calm.
Since the outbreak of hostilities between Israel and Hamas in late 2023, the Houthis have executed over 100 attacks against maritime vessels, claiming these actions are in solidarity with the Palestinian population in Gaza.
These hostilities have significantly disrupted international trade routes and prompted the US military to undertake an expansive and costly missile interception campaign.
