Flood Warnings Issued for Raqqa, Deir Ezzor as Euphrates River Rises
Syrian Civil Defense advises residents to evacuate low-lying areas and move families and belongings to safer locations amid rising floodwaters.
The Syrian Civil Defense has issued flood warnings for the provinces of Raqqa and Deir Ezzor due to increasing water levels on the Euphrates River.
According to sources from the Early Warning and Preparedness Department and the General Authority for the Euphrates Dam, the river levels could rise by more than 2 meters following an increase in discharge from the dam to 1,500 cubic meters per second.
Authorities have urged residents living near the river to evacuate low-lying areas and suspend activities such as boating and crossing earthen bridges.
Families are advised to move to safer locations with their belongings.
The Ministry of Energy has reported that three spillway gates at the Euphrates Dam were opened for the first time in over 30 years due to rising water levels, stating that this measure is necessary to protect the dam and maintain electricity stability.
Additionally, partial flooding occurred on Sunday at Al-Yonani camp for displaced families located south of Raqqa.
Dozens of tents were damaged by floodwaters, prompting calls for emergency assistance.
Displaced families are appealing for urgent humanitarian aid and relocation assistance due to fears of further flooding.
