Saudi Arabia Announces Start of Dhul Hijjah, Marking Key Phase in Islamic Pilgrimage Season

The lunar sighting decision sets the timing for Hajj and Eid al-Adha, shaping travel, religious obligations, and global Muslim observance
Saudi Arabia’s announcement of the start of Dhul Hijjah marks a critical calendar transition in Islam, triggered by the official sighting of the new crescent moon that determines the beginning of the month.

Dhul Hijjah is the twelfth and final month of the Islamic lunar calendar and carries exceptional religious significance because it contains the annual Hajj pilgrimage and Eid al-Adha, one of the most widely observed festivals in the Muslim world.

The Islamic calendar is lunar-based, meaning months begin with the physical observation of the new crescent moon rather than a fixed solar schedule.

This system can cause slight variations in the start of key religious dates across different countries, but Saudi Arabia’s announcement is widely influential due to its role in hosting the Hajj in Mecca.

Once the month is declared, the timeline for Hajj rituals is effectively set, culminating in the peak pilgrimage days at sites including Mina, Arafat, and Muzdalifah.

Hajj is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and is required once in a lifetime for Muslims who are physically and financially able to undertake it.

It brings millions of pilgrims to Saudi Arabia each year, requiring extensive logistical coordination involving transport, healthcare, security, and crowd management.

The start of Dhul Hijjah activates this system at full scale, as pilgrims begin arriving and authorities escalate operational readiness across holy sites.

The first ten days of Dhul Hijjah are also considered especially sacred in Islamic tradition, marked by increased prayer, fasting for some believers, and charitable acts.

The culmination is Eid al-Adha, which commemorates the willingness of the Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice in obedience to God, and is observed through communal prayers and ritual animal sacrifice in many countries.

While the announcement itself is routine in administrative terms, its consequences are global.

Governments coordinate travel and visa systems for pilgrims, airlines adjust capacity to handle surges in demand, and religious authorities in different countries align or confirm their own calendar interpretations.

The transition into Dhul Hijjah therefore functions as both a spiritual marker and a major logistical trigger for one of the largest annual mass gatherings in the world.

As the month begins, the focus shifts immediately to the safe and orderly execution of Hajj, with Saudi authorities moving into full operational deployment across pilgrimage infrastructure, ensuring the arrival and movement of pilgrims proceeds under tightly managed conditions throughout the sacred period.
