Gaza's Population Faces Starvation Amid Malnutrition Spike

UN agency reports desperate messages of starvation from Gaza staff, as food prices skyrocket.
The UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, has expressed concern over the severe shortages of food and other essentials in Gaza.

With a population of over two million people, the territory is experiencing surging levels of hunger.

Doctors, the civil defense agency, and medical charity Doctors Without Borders (MSF) have reported an increase in malnutrition cases recently.

UNRWA stated that food prices have increased by 40 times due to shortages, while their aid stockpiles outside Gaza could feed the entire population for more than three months.

The agency called for an end to the blockade and safe access to aid on a larger scale.

Since March 2, Israel has imposed a full blockade on Gaza, allowing only minimal entry of goods in late May. The civil defense agency reported at least three infant deaths from severe hunger and malnutrition within the past week.

Additionally, eighteen starvation-related deaths were reported between Saturday and Sunday.

Health experts warn that infants under one year of age are particularly vulnerable due to a lack of milk, leading to decreased immunity and susceptibility to diseases.

Israeli authorities claim there is no ban on baby formula or baby food entering Gaza, with over 2,000 tons of these supplies having been delivered to the territory.

However, coordination between international organizations and Israel is necessary for continued entry of essential goods.

The conflict originated from Hamas's attack on Israel in 2023, resulting in the deaths of 1,219 people, mostly civilians.

In retaliation, Israel's military campaign has led to the killing of 59,029 Palestinians, mainly civilians, according to Gaza's health ministry.
