Talks aimed at securing a ceasefire in Gaza are stalling over the extent of Israeli forces’ withdrawal from the Palestinian enclave.

According to multiple sources, Hamas has rejected withdrawal maps proposed by Israel, which would leave around 40% of the territory under Israeli control, including areas such as Rafah and further territories in northern and eastern Gaza.

In response, Israel insists on retreating to lines held during a previous ceasefire before it renewed its military campaign in March.

Both sides face additional challenges regarding aid and guarantees for ending the conflict, with one Palestinian source suggesting that more U.S. intervention may be necessary.

Delegations from Israel and Hamas have been meeting in Qatar since Sunday to discuss a potential agreement that includes a phased release of hostages and Israeli troop withdrawals.

The ongoing war has resulted in significant loss of life, displacement of Palestinians, and a humanitarian crisis.

The negotiations are set to continue despite the current impasse.
