Iran Responds to US Peace Proposal Amid Ongoing Regional Tensions

Iran Responds to US Peace Proposal Amid Ongoing Regional Tensions

Tehran's response focuses on ending the war and ensuring safe shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, while Trump and Netanyahu prepare for discussions on the Iranian reply.
DUBAI/WASHINGTON: Iran has sent its response to a US proposal for peace talks aimed at ending the ongoing conflict, according to reports from Iranian state media.

Amid rising tensions in the region, two ships were allowed to pass through the blockaded Strait of Hormuz as part of this development.

The response from Tehran emphasizes ceasing hostilities across all fronts, particularly in Lebanon, and guarantees the safety of shipping through the critical waterway.

It was noted by Iranian state TV that no further details on how or when the vital passage might reopen have been provided.

The Iranian reply aligns with the US proposal to cease fighting before tackling more contentious issues such as Iran's nuclear program.

Pakistan, which has been serving as a mediator in these negotiations, forwarded the Iranian response to the United States.

There has been no immediate comment from Washington regarding the matter.

Despite a ceasefire in place for over a month and relatively calm conditions for nearly 48 hours, hostile drones were detected over several Gulf countries on Sunday, signaling ongoing regional security threats.

In a significant development, the QatarEnergy-operated carrier Al Kharaitiyat successfully crossed the Strait of Hormuz, bound for Pakistan's Port Qasim.

This marks the first time a Qatari vessel carrying liquefied natural gas has done so since the conflict between the US and Israel began on February 28.

The transit was approved by Iran to foster goodwill with Pakistan and Qatar, both of whom are mediators in these peace talks.

Additionally, a Panama-flagged bulk carrier en route to Brazil navigated through the strait, utilizing a route designated by Iran's armed forces, as reported by Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency.

This passage illustrates tentative steps toward de-escalation and confidence-building measures amidst broader diplomatic efforts.

The situation remains tense as Trump warns of Iran's previous ‘decades-long’ defiance, suggesting an imminent shift in the dynamics at play.

He accuses Tehran of playing games with the US and other global powers for years without direct comment on Iran’s response to the latest peace proposal.

Trump is scheduled to hold talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu concerning the Iranian reply.

With President Trump set to visit China this week, there is mounting pressure for a resolution to the conflict, which has sparked a global energy crisis and poses a growing risk to the world economy.

The Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint in international shipping, remains blocked by Iran, causing disruptions worldwide.

Both sides emphasize that while combat operations against Iran have been deemed defeated, the war is not fully concluded, with remaining tasks including the removal of enriched uranium from Iranian territories and addressing concerns over proxy forces and ballistic missiles.

Diplomacy is seen as a key component in these efforts, though forceful measures remain an option according to Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu.

Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian reiterated the nation's commitment to defending its national interests with strength.

Despite ongoing diplomatic initiatives aimed at de-escalation, the threat to regional shipping lanes and economic stability remains pronounced.

The international community is preparing a mission to address the blockade, although international support for such action has been limited.

The US faces challenges in securing backing from NATO allies and other global partners for an operation that would aim to open the Strait of Hormuz.

Britain and France are among those considering deploying naval assets to the Middle East as part of a potential international mission.

However, Iran views any stationing of foreign warships around the strait under the pretext of protecting shipping as an escalation and warns of a forceful response.

In the midst of these tensions, French President Emmanuel Macron has reaffirmed France's readiness to assist in the international mission, though without committing to military intervention for the specific purpose of reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
