Lebanese Army Arrests Iraqi Man for Impersonating Security Official

Lebanese Army Arrests Iraqi Man for Impersonating Security Official

The Lebanese army arrested an Iraqi national for impersonating an Iraqi security official in Lebanon, highlighting the fragility of the country's institutions.
The Lebanese army announced on Sunday that it had apprehended an Iraqi national for allegedly impersonating an Iraqi security official within Lebanese territory.

According to a military source who spoke with AFP, the man had successfully established connections with various Lebanese security and intelligence officials by claiming employment at Iraq's Beirut embassy.

This incident has brought attention to the weaknesses in Lebanon's institutional framework, which is characterized by a sect-based power-sharing system and frequent foreign interventions.

Personal connections often play a significant role in gaining influence, financial gain, and privilege in the country.

The Lebanese army detailed the arrest through a statement, explaining that it was carried out during a surveillance and security follow-up operation aimed at addressing the man's impersonation of an Iraqi security official on Lebanese soil.

The preliminary investigations suggest that the individual had been using forged documents, with the military uniform he adopted also being seized as evidence.

The anonymous source further disclosed that the man, who is married to a Lebanese woman, managed to gain the trust of an intelligence official in Beirut by pretending to hold the position of an Iraqi officer within the counter-terrorism branch and serving as a security attaché at the Iraqi embassy.

This official reportedly facilitated meetings between the suspect and various security and military officials.

Surprisingly, the man was revealed to be working at a popular café located on the airport road in Beirut's southern suburbs, having initially been employed for valet parking services.

While the primary investigation has not yet uncovered a specific motive behind his actions, it is noted that during these meetings, he promised to provide financial assistance from Iraq.

The severity of this case stems from the man’s ability to convincingly deceive intelligence officers and assume a false identity.

This raises questions about security protocols and vetting procedures within Lebanon's intelligence community.
