Regional War Affects Iraq's Holy Cities: Najaf and Karbala

Regional War Affects Iraq's Holy Cities: Najaf and Karbala

The regional conflict between US-Israeli forces and Iran has led to a significant decline in pilgrims visiting Iraq's holy cities of Najaf and Karbala.
In the Iraqi city of Najaf, the shrine of Imam Ali stands silent amid the absence of the usual multilingual whispers from pilgrims.

The region has seen a halt in tourist traffic due to the ongoing Middle East war, which began in late February with US-Israeli strikes targeting Iran.

This conflict has drawn Iraq into the fray, resulting in attacks on US interests and Tehran-backed armed groups within the country.

The economy of Najaf, heavily reliant on religious tourism, is suffering as a result.

Shopkeepers and hotel owners, once bustling with business from pilgrims from around the world, now find themselves struggling to stay afloat.

The city's hotels have seen an 80% closure rate, leading to layoffs for over 2,000 employees.

Prior to the war, the old market near Najaf's golden-domed mausoleum was filled with tourists, but now shop owners like Abdel Rahim Harmoush are left idle and fear economic ruin if the crisis persists.

Similar circumstances can be seen in Karbala, home to the shrines of Imam Hussein and his brother Abbas.

The city has witnessed a 95% decline in tourism, forcing numerous hotels to close.

The main corridor linking Najaf and Karbala, once filled with the murmurs of tourists, is now mostly occupied by Iraqi visitors.

The local economy faces devastation as tour companies sit idle, leaving workers without employment.

Despite a fragile ceasefire implemented on April 8th, the situation in both cities remains dire.

While some pilgrims trickle through during the week, weekends see a slight increase in local activity as Iraqis visit the sacred sites.

However, the future of these holy cities and their economies hangs uncertain amid the ongoing regional conflict.
