Saudi Arabia has officially opened a $1 billion theme park, Six Flags Qiddiya City, near Riyadh, as part of the kingdom’s ambitious strategy to build a globally competitive tourism and entertainment sector under its Vision 2030 economic diversification plan.
The park, the first Six Flags operation outside North America, features world-class rides and attractions, including record-breaking coasters and immersive experiences designed to appeal to both local families and international visitors.
The opening ceremony was held under the patronage of senior Saudi officials, reflecting the broader priority placed on expanding the leisure economy and creating new job opportunities.
Six Flags Qiddiya City represents the first operational element of the larger Qiddiya City development, a multibillion-dollar entertainment, sports and cultural megaproject overseen by the Qiddiya Investment Company and backed by the Public Investment Fund.
Located against the dramatic backdrop of the Tuwaiq Mountains, the park’s attractions include high-speed roller coasters, family rides and advanced themed environments.
Officials have positioned the launch as evidence that the kingdom can deliver on large-scale infrastructure commitments after previous delays to other projects, and they forecast that the park will stimulate domestic tourism, retain local spending and support economic growth.
The Qiddiya development is expected to generate thousands of jobs and, in future phases, include additional leisure facilities such as water parks, motorsport circuits, sports venues and cultural districts, reinforcing Riyadh’s emergence as a regional hub for entertainment and lifestyle experiences.
While observers note that broader questions remain about the long-term economic viability of megaprojects, the successful opening of Six Flags Qiddiya City marks a tangible advance in the kingdom’s efforts to diversify its economy beyond oil dependence and attract international tourism.:
