Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz issues a warning to Hamas leaders, stating that they will have no immunity following recent Israeli air strikes on Gaza.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz issued a stark warning to Hamas leadership on Wednesday, declaring that they would have no immunity in the wake of a series of Israeli air strikes targeting Gaza.
These strikes were in response to an attack by Hamas forces against Israeli troops.
According to Katz, "there will be no immunity for anyone in the leadership of the terrorist organization Hamas — neither for those in suits nor for those hiding in tunnels".
He specifically referenced several Hamas political leaders residing in Doha, suggesting that their location would not shield them from retaliation.
Furthermore, Katz vowed that "whoever raises a hand against an (Israeli) soldier, his hand will be severed".
The Israeli military was instructed to take decisive action against all Hamas targets and continue to do so.
The recent escalation of hostilities has been further complicated by Qatar's role as a key mediator in the indirect talks between Israel and Hamas since the outbreak of the war in October 2023.
Qatar, along with Egypt, the United States, and Turkey, serves as one of the guarantors of the fragile peace agreement.
In September, tensions were further heightened when Israel launched an attack on Hamas negotiators in Doha, leading to widespread condemnation and a rebuke from US President
Donald Trump.
Despite this international backlash, Israel and Hamas ultimately accepted a 20-point peace plan proposed by Trump in November.
This plan called for the release of hostages held in Gaza and Palestinian prisoners, as well as a two-year ceasefire.
The current situation highlights the volatile nature of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with both sides engaging in a delicate dance of diplomacy and military confrontation.
