Palestinians Return for Prayers in West Bank Mosque After Attack

Villagers in the Israeli-occupied West Bank held community prayers at a mosque they cleaned after an attack attributed to Jewish settlers.
Palestinians in Deir Istiya, a village in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, gathered for their weekly communal prayers on Friday.

This gathering came after the community had spent time cleaning up their local mosque, which was targeted in an assault that occurred the previous night.

According to reports from Reuters, the mosque sustained damage including broken windows, graffiti with insulting slogans, and burn marks that suggested an attempt at arson.

The attack is said to have involved Jewish settlers, a group that has seen an increase in such actions against Palestinians according to the United Nations.

The UN documented 264 attacks on Palestinians in October alone, marking the highest monthly total since they began tracking these incidents in 2006.

This recent spike in violence has raised concerns both within and outside of the region.

The Israeli military acknowledged the incident by stating that security forces were dispatched to the mosque after reports of the attack surfaced.

However, no suspects were identified or arrested following their investigation.

The military emphasized its stance against any form of violence, asserting a commitment to maintaining security in the area.

Despite these challenges and amid ongoing tensions, Palestinians remain resolute about their presence in the West Bank.

Raed Salman, a leader with Fatah, one of the main Palestinian political parties, remarked on the community's determination not to be swayed by efforts aimed at taking control over their lands.

The West Bank is home to approximately 2.7 million Palestinians and holds significant importance for their aspirations towards an independent state.

The international community, including the United Nations, views settlements in the West Bank as unlawful under international law due to their expansion and the fragmentation they cause to the territory.

This legal stance reflects broader global diplomatic positions on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Palestinians have further criticized what they perceive as inadequate protection from Israeli forces against settler violence.

On a day marked by these significant events, worshipper Wadee’ Salman highlighted the community's resilience in facing adversity head-on.

Despite the damage inflicted upon their mosque, they were determined to show not just their own strength but also a message to political leaders like Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The swift cleanup and preparations for returning their mosque to its usual state of use underscored this determination.
