The United Arab Emirates has announced a plan to enhance aid deliveries into Gaza through a maritime route from Cyprus, emphasizing the importance of maintaining multiple access points.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is taking steps to increase its humanitarian assistance to Gaza by utilizing a sea corridor passing through Cyprus.
According to Minister of State Lana Nusseibeh, this maritime route plays a crucial role in delivering pre-screened aid from the Eastern Mediterranean island to the Palestinian enclave, which has been significantly affected by recent conflicts.
The UAE has collaborated with Cyprus in sending substantial amounts of aid to Gaza as part of its relief efforts. The UAE's decision comes after an agreement between Israel and Hamas, facilitated by former US President
Donald Trump, which aimed to bring a halt to the devastating war in Gaza that began on October 7, 2023.
This initial phase focused on securing a ceasefire and involved the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners.
Despite this progress, humanitarian organizations have repeatedly highlighted that aid deliveries to Gaza remain insufficient. To address this issue, the so-called Amalthea Initiative was launched by the UAE last year, which has seen approximately 22,000 tons of pre-screened aid dispatched from Cyprus.
Some shipments were sent directly to Gaza through a temporary pier established by the US, while others were transported to Ashdod Port in Israel for further distribution.Nusseibeh emphasized that maintaining multiple entry points into Gaza is crucial for ensuring a steady flow of humanitarian assistance.
The UAE and Cyprus are working together to ensure that aid continues to reach those in need through various modes of transport, including land, air, and sea routes.
