Greece Aims for Enhanced Cooperation with Libya to Combat Migration

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis emphasizes the need for Libyan cooperation in curbing migration flows into Europe.
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has underscored the importance of collaborating with Libya and the European Union to address the rising tide of migration from North Africa.

This move comes as Greece prepares to deploy additional naval assets near Libya's coast, aiming to deter migrants from embarking on perilous sea journeys towards Greek islands such as Crete and Gavdos.Severe instability in Libya has led to a significant surge in migration over recent months.

The absence of robust law enforcement and the division of the country since the 2011 overthrow of Muammar Qaddafi have created an environment conducive to unauthorized departures.

Mitsotakis's call for Libyan authorities' cooperation reflects a growing concern among European nations that need to address this influx effectively. The Greek government's announcement of deploying two frigates and another vessel off Libya's waters is part of a broader strategy to prevent the exodus of migrants from North Africa and the Middle East, particularly those from conflict-torn regions such as Sudan.

Such measures seek to intercept potential migrants before they breach Libyan territorial waters. In addition to naval deployments, Mitsotakis has expressed his intention to brief European counterparts on the escalating situation in Libya during the upcoming EU summit in Brussels.

He also called for swift support from the European Commission to tackle this pressing issue collectively.

Furthermore, an ensemble of key European officials, including the EU's migration commissioner along with ministers from Italy, Greece, and Malta, is scheduled to visit Libya in early July to engage in discussions aimed at devising comprehensive solutions. The escalating situation highlights both the challenges faced by Europe in managing its external borders and the necessity for cooperation among states like Libya, which are pivotal in addressing migratory flows.

The emphasis on collaboration with Libya underscores the strategic importance of working with countries that have found themselves at the forefront of migration routes into Europe due to their geographic positioning.
