Russia Expresses Disapproval Over Iran's Potential Suspension of IAEA Cooperation

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warns that ending cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency may undermine Iran's nuclear stance.
Moscow: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov voiced his opposition to a potential move by Iran to suspend its cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), following an Iranian parliamentary vote in favor of halting work with the UN nuclear agency.

The decision, which still requires approval from Iran's Guardian Council, was described by Lavrov as 'advisory' to Iran's executive branch.

Lavrov emphasized Russia’s interest in maintaining cooperation between Iran and the IAEA, aiming to ensure that Iran adheres to its assertions of not seeking to develop nuclear weapons.

This stance comes amidst rising tensions in the Middle East, where Israel and the United States have launched strikes against Iranian nuclear facilities over the past few weeks.

Russia's relationship with Iran has been significant this year, marked by a strategic agreement that includes mutual assistance in case of aggression.

However, recent developments suggest a shift in the regional dynamics as key allies of Russia face pressure.

The fall of Syria's government in December and now the potential suspension of IAEA cooperation from Iran indicate that Russia might be losing its influential status in the Middle East.

According to Nikita Smagin, an expert on Russia-Iran relations, these developments suggest that 'Russia is potentially losing its status as a superpower' in the eyes of Middle Eastern nations.

As Russia diverts resources and attention towards its military campaign in Ukraine, its traditional allies are being sidelined, signaling a broader realignment in regional power dynamics.
