Israeli Strike on South Lebanon Kills One: Health Ministry

An Israeli strike in southern Lebanon results in one fatality, according to the Lebanese health ministry, amidst ongoing tensions.
BEIRUT: An Israeli strike on southern Lebanon resulted in the death of one individual on Saturday, as reported by the Lebanese health ministry.

The incident occurred when an 'Israeli enemy' drone struck a vehicle in Kunin, south Lebanon, killing the occupant in what is described as a preliminary toll.

The Israeli military has not yet commented on this event. This attack follows a series of strikes by Israel on Friday that killed one woman and injured 25 others in various locations across southern Lebanon.

According to Lebanon's state-run National News Agency (NNA), the woman was also killed by an Israeli drone strike on an apartment building in Nabatiyeh.

The Israeli military claimed it did not intentionally target any civilian structures, asserting that its operations targeted sites associated with Hezbollah. The NNA reported that seven people were injured following a series of heavy strikes in the Nabatiyeh region.

In response, the Israeli military stated their aim was to neutralize potential threats by targeting what they described as 'terror infrastructure' in these areas.

They alleged that a rocket, part of the Fire and Defense Array (FAD) site, caused an unintended explosion due to being hit during the strike. This incident highlights ongoing tensions between Israel and Lebanon, with Israel continuing to carry out strikes despite the ceasefire from November 2019 aimed at ending hostilities with Hezbollah.

Under this agreement, Hezbollah was required to withdraw its fighters north of the Litani River, effectively demarcating areas under the control of the Lebanese army and United Nations peacekeeping forces. However, Israel has retained troops in five locations within southern Lebanon that it deems strategically important, thus not fully adhering to the withdrawal requirement.

This situation reflects a complex and sensitive geopolitical context, with both countries experiencing periods of heightened conflict.
