Ships Bound for Gaza with Humanitarian Aid Prepare to Set Sail from Barcelona Amid Ongoing Conflict

A flotilla of ships carrying humanitarian aid and activists is preparing to set sail for the Gaza Strip, aiming to break Israel's blockade and deliver essential supplies to the Palestinian territory amidst escalating tensions and a military offense by Israel.
BARCELONA: A maritime convoy known as the Global Sumud Flotilla is gearing up to depart for the Gaza Strip, with the goal of challenging Israel's longstanding blockade and providing much-needed humanitarian aid.

The flotilla, comprising delegations from 44 countries, plans to enlist additional ships from ports in Italy, Greece, and Tunisia en route through the western Mediterranean to Gaza.

Organizers anticipate a total of around 20 vessels joining the mission.Hours before departure, boats displaying Palestinian flags lined up at a pier in Barcelona, as hundreds of supporters chanted pro-Palestinian slogans.

The atmosphere was charged with the fervor of solidarity and advocacy for the besieged territory.

Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, among the most recognizable figures participating in the expedition, spoke at a press conference, emphasizing the dire situation in Gaza and the global community's inaction towards the plight of Palestinians. This is not Thunberg's first attempt to reach Gaza.

In June, she was deported after the vessel she was aboard, along with 11 others, was intercepted by the Israeli military.

Similarly, in late July, another aid shipment was detained by Israel, resulting in the confiscation of humanitarian supplies including baby formula and medicine, as reported by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition.Earlier this month, it was revealed that Gaza City is experiencing famine levels, with over half a million residents facing severe hunger due to the prolonged crisis.

In response, an Israeli official announced plans to reduce or halt humanitarian aid deliveries into northern Gaza, amidst a widening military campaign against Hamas.

The Gaza Health Ministry has documented at least 332 deaths related to malnutrition since the conflict began, including 124 children. The ongoing war, initiated by Hamas's October 2023 attack on Israel and subsequent hostage-taking, has evolved into a protracted military operation with devastating consequences for the civilian population of Gaza.

According to the territory's health ministry, over 63,000 people have lost their lives in the conflict, with nearly the entire population displaced. The Global Sumud Flotilla's departure marks another chapter in the fraught history between Israel and Palestine, with international attention focused on the humanitarian situation in Gaza and the efficacy of peaceful protest against prolonged blockades and military actions.
