Israel Intensifies Airstrikes in Gaza City Suburbs Amid Plans for Full-Scale Offensive

Israeli military operations escalate as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's security cabinet prepares to discuss next steps in the conflict.
CAIRO/JERUSALEM: The situation in and around Gaza continues to deteriorate, with Israeli forces intensifying their assault on the suburbs of Gaza City.

Over the past few days, residents have reported extensive damage to homes and infrastructure, leading to a significant increase in displacement as families seek refuge from the ongoing violence.

According to local health authorities, at least 18 people have lost their lives in recent incidents, including those who perished while attempting to access food supplies near an aid distribution site in central Gaza.

These tragic events underscore the precarious circumstances faced by the civilian population within the conflict zone.

The Israeli military has been gradually escalating its operations around Gaza City over the past three weeks, with the recent suspension of temporary ceasefire periods previously utilized for humanitarian aid deliveries.

This shift marks a significant designation of the area as a 'dangerous combat zone,' heightening concerns regarding the safety and well-being of those residing within it.

The escalation in violence has not gone unnoticed by global organizations such as the Red Cross, which have issued urgent warnings regarding the impending full-scale evacuation of Gaza City.

Such an operation, according to forecasts, could lead to massive population displacements that southern areas of the enclave are ill-equipped to handle, given the current severe shortages of food, shelter, and medical supplies.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's decision to convene his security cabinet this weekend reflects the Israeli government’s strategic approach to the next stages of the conflict.

While a full-scale assault on Gaza City is not yet imminent, the discussions signal Israel's determination to address Hamas' last stronghold effectively.

The military has warned that the ongoing operations pose risks to the remaining hostages held by Hamas in Gaza, amidst growing public pressure for their release and an end to the war.

These developments highlight the complex and deeply humanitarian dimensions of the conflict, as both sides grapple with the human cost and the uncertain future of the region.

The situation remains tense, with no clear resolution in sight, except for the continuous efforts towards de-escalation and peace negotiations.
