Detention of Key Military Officer Signals Increased Security Operations in Syria

Syria’s security forces apprehend multiple former regime officials and uncover hidden weapons caches amid ongoing instability.
Syrian authorities have arrested a senior military official closely linked to Maher al-Assad, commander of the Fourth Division and brother of former President Bashar al-Assad.

Major Abdul Karim Ahmad al-Hamadeh was taken into custody for his role in coordinating between former regime officers and leaders of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

The Director of General Security in Deir ez-Zor province announced the arrest, highlighting al-Hamadeh’s previous position as the head of reconciliation efforts with the fallen regime.

He was also serving as an advisor responsible for liaising between former regime military officers and IRGC commanders.

Security forces have intensified their operations to track down remnants of the fallen Assad regime across various regions in Syria.

Recently, they apprehended Lieutenant Colonel Owais Dibb, a former official in the Military Security Branch of Homs province, while attempting to flee to Lebanon from the town of al-Aqrabiya in the western Qusayr countryside.

Local reports indicated that a separate operation earlier led to the arrest of Major Abdul Karim al-Mohimid, who was associated with the tribal operations room in Deir ez-Zor, along with his son Ahmad al-Karim al-Mohimid.

This arrest occurred shortly after the capture of Mouayad al-Dewahi, known as ‘Abu Jawad,’ a commander of the ‘Zainab Brigade,’ an armed group affiliated with the IRGC in the city of Mayadeen and its surrounding areas in eastern Deir ez-Zor.

An additional notable arrest was that of Yasir Matroud, the media officer of the National Defense militia, another entity associated with the previous regime in Deir ez-Zor.

According to local sources, al-Mohimid had emerged during the previous summer as a key figure in the tribal operations room under the Assad regime, playing a significant role in escalating confrontations between tribal forces and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), reportedly under the encouragement of Iranian interests.

In a related development, security agencies have uncovered significant caches of weapons and munitions.

A recent operation revealed arms hidden within a well in the village of Al-Mudabeh in eastern Homs, believed to be intended for potentially criminal activities by remnants of the previous regime.

The Director of General Security in Latakia province announced the discovery of another weapons depot in the city of Qardaha.

Additionally, the security forces received firearms from local leaders in the villages of al-Boudi and al-Qalayat in the Jableh countryside, as part of ongoing efforts to consolidate weapon control under state authority.

Reports also indicate that security forces discovered a stash of weapons belonging to remnants of the regime near Hmeimim Airport last week during a routine patrol.

Among the recovered items were four American-made TOW anti-tank missile launchers.

The Syrian authorities periodically report the seizure of various arms depots across the country, indicating the presence of a substantial arsenal left by the previous regime in areas that remain difficult to access.

A significant portion of these arms is believed to be utilized in offensive operations targeting security and military forces.
