Houthi Militants Cut Off Gas Supply to Yemeni Government in Economic Strangulation
Houthi militants have stopped the supply of gas from the Marib field to the Yemeni government in an attempt to financially strangle the government.
The Houthis have seized hundreds of gas tanker trucks and have prevented the entry of loaded tankers into their territory, leading to severe shortages of cooking gas in areas under their control.
The Houthis have instead been importing more expensive gas through Hodeidah port, which has resulted in the government having to pay double the price for local gas.
The Yemeni government accused the Houthis of selling Iranian gas at inflated prices, triple the cost of local gas, which has added to the financial burden of the citizens.
The information minister also accused the Houthis of using the UN-brokered ceasefire to import fuel from Iran through Hodeidah.
The Houthis' actions have been met with anger on social media, with people complaining that the government is distributing gas only in Houthi-controlled areas.
Recently, the Houthis also stopped a dozen lorries carrying flour from Aden, causing a shortage of the commodity and potentially costing traders millions of riyals.
The Houthis' economic measures have prompted Yemeni Prime Minister Maeen Abdul Malik Saeed to call on international donors to help the government stabilize the economy and carry out its economic goals.
