International Concerns Rise Over Escalating Conflict in Gaza

Germany and Italy call for an end to hostilities amid a worsening humanitarian crisis.
Germany has expressed deep concern regarding the escalating situation in Gaza, where intense Israeli military operations pose risks to the lives of hostages, including German citizens, according to a statement from the Foreign Ministry.

The ministry emphasized that the ongoing offensive could further endanger the remaining hostages and exacerbate the already dire humanitarian conditions faced by the population of Gaza.

In parallel, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani urged Israel to cease its military offensive, highlighting that the Palestinian civilian population must not continue to bear the brunt of the conflict.

Tajani stated that the Israeli government should be told to halt its military actions, secure a ceasefire, and prioritize the humane treatment of civilians caught in the crossfire, referring to them as "victims of Hamas."

These statements reflect a growing international unease regarding Israel's extensive military campaign, which has reportedly led to significant displacement among Gaza's 2 million residents and resulted in over 53,000 fatalities, according to health authorities in Gaza.

Tajani's remarks came as he was scheduled to meet with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Rome.

Although the Italian government has traditionally been a strong supporter of Israel within Europe, there is an increasing sense of discomfort regarding the humanitarian impact of the ongoing military actions.

On the diplomatic front, a senior official from Hamas announced that new indirect negotiations with Israel have commenced in Doha, aiming to bring an end to the conflict.

Taher Al-Nunu, the Hamas representative, indicated that this round of discussions is occurring without preconditions from either side and will cover various topics, including the cessation of hostilities, Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, and potential exchanges involving prisoners.

Previous attempts to negotiate a resolution have been unsuccessful, with a two-month ceasefire having collapsed after Israel resumed operations in Gaza on March 18.
