Israel Initiates Ground Offensive in Gaza City Amid Escalating Conflict

Military operations reported to have caused numerous casualties while Israel intensifies strikes across the region.
On April 4, 2025, Israel launched a new ground offensive in Gaza City, coinciding with a surge in violence that has resulted in at least 30 fatalities in the Palestinian territories since dawn, according to local rescuers.

The offensive follows the collapse of a recent truce between Israel and Hamas, with Israeli officials asserting that the military actions aim to compel the militant group to release hostages still in captivity.

Israeli military operations have expanded to include intensified strikes in Lebanon and Syria, notably leading to the death of a Hamas commander in the Lebanese city of Sidon, along with his son, who was identified as a member of the group's armed wing.

In the Shujaiya district of Gaza City, the Israeli military announced the deployment of ground troops to 'expand the security zone.' This operation has been characterized by Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz as a strategy to eliminate terrorist infrastructure within Gaza.

Local health officials have indicated a grim situation, with the Gaza civil defense agency reporting significant civilian casualties, including a recent strike in Khan Yunis that killed at least 25 individuals.

Eyewitness accounts describe the chaos and devastation, with one resident expressing fear as the violence closed in on their shelter.

Further complicating the humanitarian landscape, a strike on a school serving as a shelter for displaced Palestinians reportedly killed at least 31 people, including women and children, in the Al-Tuffah neighborhood.

Rescue operations continue, with six individuals still unaccounted for, including a pregnant woman.

The impact of these attacks has elicited desperate responses from survivors, reflecting the dire humanitarian circumstances in the region.

According to the health ministry controlled by Hamas in Gaza, the overall death toll since the onset of intensified bombing on March 18 has reached 1,249, with the total fatalities in the conflict since October 2023 now exceeding 50,609.

The Israeli military has stated that more than 600 'terror targets' have been struck across Gaza since operations resumed.

The ongoing situation has raised significant concerns regarding civilian safety and humanitarian conditions in the region.
