Israeli Air Strikes Target Surroundings of Daraa, Syria

Recent air strikes result in casualties as Israel continues operations against perceived military threats in southern Syria.
On March 17, 2025, Israeli airstrikes targeted the area surrounding the Syrian city of Daraa, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to 19 others, according to reports from Syrian state news agency SANA.

The Israeli military, through local media outlets, confirmed ongoing operations directed at military objectives in southern Syria.

Emergency services were deployed immediately to the impacted areas, with reports indicating a state of panic among local residents following the explosions.

This incident follows previous Israeli air raids, including strikes in late February against a military site belonging to the Syrian Ministry of Defense located in Tel al-Hara in western Daraa, alongside multiple attacks across other regions, including the capital, Damascus.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly vowed to conduct such strikes against any entity posing a threat to Israel in the region.

In February, he emphasized the necessity of a complete demilitarization of southern Syria, asserting that his government would not tolerate the presence of security forces linked to the newly established authorities in Syria near its borders.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant has also stated that Israel will defend itself against any threats emanating from Syria.

He has reiterated that Israel's military operations aim to ensure that southern Syria remains demilitarized and free from potential threats, asserting that Israeli forces would maintain their presence in security zones and on Mount Hermon to protect communities in the Golan Heights and Galilee region.

Following the ousting of former President Bashar al-Assad’s regime in December 2024, Israel has launched hundreds of airstrikes targeting military installations, naval bases, and air force sites throughout Syria, indicating a strategy aimed at preventing the new leadership from acquiring the remnants of the former military's arsenal.

Furthermore, Israeli forces have increased incursions into the disarmed buffer zone in the occupied Golan Heights, which borders the territory under Israeli control.
