In a trilateral meeting held in Tokyo, foreign ministers from Japan, South Korea, and China underscored their collective responsibility in promoting peace on the Korean Peninsula.

The meeting, attended by South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul, Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya, and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, follows a previous summit in May in Seoul where the three countries reaffirmed their commitment to deepening trade relations and achieving a denuclearized Korean Peninsula.

During the discussions, Cho emphasized the shared interest in maintaining peace and stability in the region, reflecting a consensus amid historical and territorial disputes among the nations.

Minister Iwaya described the exchange as 'frank' and indicated that the ministers addressed various regional and international issues, confirming their intention to foster future-oriented cooperation.

The backdrop of the meeting includes rising tensions due to North Korea's ongoing weapons tests and its military support for Russia amid the conflict in Ukraine.

Iwaya remarked on the increasingly severe international situation, suggesting that the current moment represents a critical juncture in history that necessitates overcoming divisions and confrontation.
