Lebanese President Calls for International Action Amid Border Tensions

Joseph Aoun urges global commitment to implement UN resolutions as violence escalates along the Lebanese-Israeli border.
BEIRUT: Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has urged the international community to translate its expressions of support into tangible actions for Lebanon, emphasizing the urgency of addressing ongoing tensions along its southern borders.

Speaking at Dar Al-Fatwa, Aoun highlighted the critical need for the implementation of UN Resolution 1701 and the enforcement of a ceasefire agreement, stating that Lebanon cannot attain stability without addressing these issues.

Aoun remarked, "The implementation of UN Resolution 1701 and the ceasefire agreement is a pivotal issue requiring attention and care." He pointed out that Lebanon's security, stability, and sovereignty hinge upon the enforcement of international laws, including the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territory and the return of detainees.

He further declared that normalcy cannot be restored in regions affected by conflict without proactive measures to ensure the integrity of Lebanon's borders.

Aoun's comments were made in the context of renewed violence, specifically referencing an Israeli drone strike on Saturday that targeted a vehicle in the village of Bourj El-Mlouk, resulting in one fatality.

According to the Israeli military, the deceased was identified as a Hezbollah member; however, further details were not provided by Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency.

This airstrike is the latest incident following a US-brokered ceasefire that concluded a protracted 14-month conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in late November 2024. Despite the ceasefire, which was seen as a crucial step toward de-escalation, sporadic incidents of violence have persisted, raising alarms about the ceasefire's stability and the potential for a resurgence of hostilities.
