Madleen Ship Approaches Egyptian Shores as Activists Aim to Deliver Aid to Gaza

The vessel carrying international activists is set to reach Gaza amid calls for ensuring its safety and adherence to international law.
The 'Madleen' ship, part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, is nearing the northern shores of Egypt, with few remaining nautical miles to Gaza.

The International Committee to Break the Siege on Gaza stated that the journey is proceeding quietly after earlier nights of heightened concern due to the proximity of drones, which were later identified as surveillance operations.

Currently onboard the vessel are twelve activists from various nations, including prominent climate activist Greta Thunberg.

French Member of the European Parliament, Rima Hassan, has called for the 'Madleen' to be allowed to proceed to Gaza safely.

In statements made from the ship, Hassan emphasized that any attempt to target or intercept the vessel would constitute a blatant violation of international law.

The crew of the 'Madleen' anticipates reaching a point 100 nautical miles off Gaza by Monday.

Yasmin Ajar, a human rights activist and member of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, shared that the mission aims to deliver humanitarian aid to a population suffering from hunger for three months.

Ajar stated that they are working to open humanitarian corridors and warned that any violent confrontation would be considered a war crime, underscoring the ship’s message to the world regarding the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The 'Madleen' set sail from Catania, Sicily, on the previous Sunday, marking its departure as part of the ongoing effort to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza and deliver much-needed humanitarian assistance.

This initiative follows a previous failed attempt in early May when another ship from the coalition was targeted by Israeli drones in international waters near Malta.

The 'Madleen' marks the thirty-sixth vessel in the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, which has faced threats from Israel regarding the use of force to prevent ships from reaching Gaza.

The history of the coalition includes the 2010 incident involving the Mavi Marmara, when Israeli forces attacked the ship, resulting in the deaths of ten Turkish citizens and the detention of other activists.

Founded in 2010, the Freedom Flotilla aims to provide moral and humanitarian support to the Palestinian people, actively working against the Israeli blockade of Gaza.
