Newcastle United Ends Trophy Drought with League Cup Victory Over Liverpool

Newcastle secures a 2-1 victory at Wembley, marking their first major trophy win since 1969.
Newcastle United has captured its first major trophy in over five decades by defeating Liverpool 2-1 in the League Cup final held at Wembley Stadium on March 16, 2025. This victory represents a significant milestone for the club, which has not celebrated a major silverware win since the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1969. The triumph also marks Newcastle's return to prominence in English football, having last won a domestic trophy with the FA Cup in 1955.

During the match, Dan Burn opened the scoring for Newcastle in the 45th minute with a powerful header from a corner taken by Kieran Trippier.

Alexander Isak extended Newcastle's lead shortly after the halftime break, netting his 27th goal of the season with a well-executed finish from a Jacob Murphy cross.

Federico Chiesa added a late goal for Liverpool in stoppage time, but it was not enough to change the outcome.

Newcastle's win is particularly notable given the club's history of struggles, having experienced five relegations since their last trophy.

The club's fortunes shifted dramatically in 2021 following a takeover by a Saudi-backed consortium, which brought in manager Eddie Howe.

Under Howe's guidance, Newcastle has progressed from a team facing relegation to one that now competes for and wins titles.

The match at Wembley was a stark contrast to Liverpool's recent performances; the team had advanced to the final following a successful run in the competition but faced disappointment just days after a penalty shootout loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

Despite maintaining a substantial lead in the Premier League, Liverpool’s defeat in the League Cup final emphasizes the shifting dynamics of English football, particularly as Newcastle builds momentum.

Newcastle's supporters dominated the atmosphere in the stadium, with many seen carrying banners urging the team to 'write your name in the history books.' The energy and determination displayed by Newcastle on the pitch highlighted their resolve to overcome past shortcomings, demonstrating a significant turnaround in their competitive ethos.

The match featured several key moments, including Newcastle's early opportunities, with Bruno Guimarães coming close to scoring.

Liverpool struggled to capitalize on their possession, with star player Mohamed Salah muted throughout the match.

In the end, Newcastle's resilience and tactical execution secured a historic win that will resonate with their fanbase for years to come.
