Renewed Clashes Erupt on Eastern Lebanon Border

Lebanese Army Reinforces Presence Amid Ongoing Violence Following Syrian Attacks
Clashes have reignited between the Syrian army and armed groups aligned with residents from the Bekaa Valley along the Lebanese-Syrian border near the northern city of Hermel.

This escalation followed the bombardment of the village of Hosh Sayid Ali from the Syrian side, prompting a response from the Lebanese Armed Forces.

Calm had briefly returned on Monday morning after a night marked by intense fighting, which began on Sunday evening and persisted until dawn.

The unrest was reportedly sparked by the killing of three elements of Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham in the vicinity of rural Homs.

The fighting involved the use of medium and heavy weaponry, including artillery shells and rocket launchers.

Preliminary reports indicate the Syrian army reinforced its positions at the border and demanded the surrender of those responsible for the deaths of its personnel, which escalated tensions.

In response, the Lebanese army conducted deployments in the areas of Hermel and Qsar, regions predominantly populated by the Shia community supportive of Hezbollah.

The Lebanese forces retaliated against fire coming from the Syrian side.

According to available information, dozens of shells fell on Lebanese areas adjacent to the Syrian border amid reports of low-altitude flights by Syrian Shaheen drones, especially over the towns of Hermel and Qsar.

The Lebanese military reported an incident leading to the death of two Syrians and wounding another at the border near the Qsar-Hermel area.

The injured individual was transported to a hospital for treatment but succumbed to his injuries.

In this context, the military implemented exceptional security measures and engaged in extensive communications, leading to the handover of three bodies to the Syrian side.

Simultaneously, the Syrian Ministry of Defense accused Hezbollah of being involved in the kidnapping and murder of its soldiers, stating that armed groups cross from Lebanon into rural Homs and killed three Syrian army members.

However, Hezbollah's media relations swiftly denied these accusations, asserting that the group had no involvement in the border events and reiterating its longstanding position of non-involvement in occurrences within Syrian territory.

Residents of the Lebanese border towns experienced a turbulent night characterized by exchanges of gunfire and incoming artillery.

Reports indicate that the resulting violence claimed the life of a child in the town of Qsar and injured several others.

A Lebanese security source indicated that the security developments along the Syrian border necessitated a significant deployment of the Lebanese army to deescalate tensions with the Syrian side.

The source noted that Lebanese artillery units responded to gunfire originating from Syria, viewing the attacks as violations of Lebanese sovereignty, particularly as Syria failed to notify Lebanon in advance about the situation that led to the escalation.

Ongoing communication efforts between both countries aim to contain the conflict, which is deemed detrimental to both parties.

The Lebanese state reportedly will not tolerate the presence of armed groups along the border, whether affiliated with Hezbollah, local tribes, or other civilians.

Should conflicts arise with the Syrian side, they are expected to be addressed through diplomatic channels.

Amidst these developments, heightened tensions have also emerged within the Lebanese street concerning reports of the Syrian security forces arresting two Lebanese individuals, Mohamad Madlaj and Nors Madlaj, early Monday within Syrian territory.

Subsequent reports indicated that their bodies were found in the vicinity of the dam in Matrebah, close to the Lebanese border, though conflicting information remains regarding the situation.

The Lebanese army is actively pursuing investigations to verify these claims.

Local tribes in the Bekaa Valley have expressed their desire not to implicate Hezbollah in the border incidents.

A representative from one of the tribes stated that the community would defend their homes and families, emphasizing support for the Lebanese army's rapid deployment and response to the attacks on their towns.

The community highlighted their aspiration for peaceful coexistence with their Syrian neighbors, contingent upon achieving security and dignity, while calling for an investigation into the incident involving the soldiers and accountability for any proven involvement.
