Rising Israeli Concerns Over Turkish Movements Near Palmyra, Syria

Israeli security officials fear potential direct confrontation between Israel and Turkey amidst shifting regional dynamics.
Israeli media reports indicate escalating concerns in Tel Aviv regarding the prospect of direct confrontation between Turkey and Israel within Syrian territory.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is reportedly framing such a confrontation as an inevitable outcome.

Sources from Israeli security agencies revealed that several consultations were held last week to discuss developments in Syria, underscoring heightened vigilance regarding Turkish military activities.

The reports indicate that the new Syrian government is working to restore military bases and enhance missile and defense capabilities in the southern regions close to Israel.

Moreover, these sources cited Turkish-Syrian communications aimed at transferring areas near Palmyra to the Turkish army in exchange for economic and military support for Damascus.

Potential Turkish movements in Palmyra have raised significant alarms within Israeli security circles.

Israeli Channel 12 news referenced Netanyahu's security consultations to address fears regarding potential Turkish control in Syria, suggesting that his advisors are fostering narratives in Israeli media that a confrontation with Turkey on Syrian soil is a foregone conclusion.

A recent report from an Israeli government committee advised Netanyahu to prepare for a potential war with Turkey, amid growing fears in Tel Aviv of an alliance between Ankara and the new administration in Damascus after the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime.

According to the Jerusalem Post, the 'Security Budget and Force Build-up Committee,' also known as the Nogel Committee after its head Jacob Nogel, alerted Netanyahu in January to the dangers posed by a Syrian-Turkish alliance.

The committee described this partnership as potentially creating a new and significant threat to Israeli security, possibly evolving into a risk greater than that posed by Iran.

The committee's findings suggest that Israel should brace for a direct engagement with Turkey due to anticipated tensions stemming from what is described as Turkey's ambitions to reassert its Ottoman influence in the region.
