Saudi Arabia Continues Aid Bridge to Syria Amid Ongoing Crisis

King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center's effort persists to support Syrian healthcare and humanitarian needs.
In a world marred by humanitarian crises, Saudi Arabia stands out for its continued commitment to aid Syria through the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center.

The center has implemented both aerial and terrestrial aid bridges since January 2023, as disclosed by Fahd Al-Asimi, Director of Rapid Response at the center.

The efforts align with initiatives led by King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to alleviate the humanitarian distress experienced by Syrian civilians.

Since Syria's re-engagement with the Arab League, Saudi Arabia has prioritized its support efforts, delivering over 730 tons of humanitarian supplies as of mid-January.

These efforts include medical equipment, essential medicines, tents, and food supplies like flour and rice, aiming to cater to areas in acute need.

The operation has involved the mobilization of eight planes carrying 189 tons of supplies, alongside 60 trucks transporting 541 tons via the Jordan-Syria Nasib border crossing.

Al-Asimi confirmed ongoing discussions with the Syrian Minister of Health, Dr. Maher Sharaf, regarding the immediate needs of health facilities and possible visits from a Saudi medical team.

Among the considerations are support for medical staff, the provision of drugs and medical devices, and ambulance services to reinforce Syria’s fragile healthcare infrastructure.

These humanitarian undertakings underscore the Kingdom's long-standing advocacy for the Syrian people since the onset of the civil conflict in 2011.

The center has consistently provided substantial resources to both internally displaced persons and refugees across neighboring countries, concurrently responding to recent natural disasters, such as the earthquake in northwest Syria in February 2023.

In collaboration with entities such as the Syrian Arab Red Crescent and local organizations, this phase focuses on emergency relief with plans for continued assistance to partner agencies pending the immediate crisis.

Al-Asimi outlined that the healthcare sector, among others, demands urgent intervention given the aspirations of over three million Syrian refugees awaiting conditions conducive to safe return.

These include comprehensive medical services and established healthcare guarantees.

Aid distribution extends across Syrian governorates, including Daraa, Damascus, Latakia, and Homs, with future plans to cover the entire nation.

Al-Asimi recounted witnessing emotional expressions of joy as Syrians crossed the border homeward through the Nasib passage, some beset with tears and others overwhelmed with elation.

Emphasizing the Kingdom's supportive role, Al-Asimi reassured the Syrian populace that Saudi Arabia stands with them in these trying times, with hopes of an advancing pathway towards stability and reconstruction.

Notably, the initiative resonates deeply with returning Syrians, whose relief at their homeland’s border is unmistakable as they move past years of hardship into a landscape promising hope and renewal.
